DESCRIPTION:There may not be a more honest bluesman than Mike Zito\, whose 15th album ‘First Class Life’ comes out May 11 on Ruf Records. The rocking yet poignant title track explores his journey from addiction to sobriety and then musical recognition; he is a two-time 2017 Blues Music Award nominee. “Second chance at a first class life\,” he sings\, recalling the hard times. The Texas-based musician smiles and continues\, “I grew up poor in St. Louis\, and now I’m travelling the world to sing my songs.”Zito’s star has been on the rise of late both solo and as a member of the Royal Southern Brotherhood\, with bandmates Cyril Neville\, Devon Allman\, Charlie Wooton and Yonrico Scott.As is fitting for a man with the word “Blues” tattooed across his picking hand\, ‘First Class Life’ focuses squarely on blues with heart and chops to spare\, not to mention wit and openness. The punchy “Time For A Change” conjures the tension in the world today while the exquisite Memphis-style song\, “The World We Live In\,” which recalls BB King in its world-weariness. The electrified blues bounce of “Dying Day” finds Zito swearing lifelong allegiance to his wife. “Old Black Graveyard” sets the scene of a bluesman’s final resting place and its disrepair\, along with some possible supernatural influences\, with Zito’s masterful slide guitar flourishes driving it home.Yet the record’s darker moments are offset by cuts like “Mama Don’t Like No Wah Wah\,” the funky crash-bang-wallop gem written with Ruf labelmate Bernard Allison about the late legend Koko Taylor. “Bernard told me about his first gig as guitarist for Taylor\,” laughs Mike. “Koko didn’t like any effects on the guitar\, she wanted it to sound natural. When Bernard made an attempt to use an effect on his guitar after playing with her for months\, he got caught. ‘Mama don’t like no wah wah’ is what he was told. That’s a song to me!” The two guitar slingers trade off\, trying to one up each other atop a funky blues groove\, including Allison pulling out his forbidden wah wah pedal. The tongue-in-cheek “Back Problems” is a showcase for Zito’s wit as a songwriter.In addition to the press and Blues Music Award love\, Zito has earned from fellow artists. As leader of the legendary trio(The Meditations) Ansel and his fellow band members performed at the historical ONE LOVE PEACE CONCERT\, held April\, 22nd 1978\, at the request of Bob Marley. Legends like Jimmy Cliff\, Sly and Robbie\, Philip Smart\, Willie Lindo and Gregory Isaac are a few of the people that Ansel has worked with. These contributions have sculpted the sound of Roots Rock Reggae over the years. Making The Meditations a fundamental and essential part of reggae music. \nOver the past few years Ansel (who has produced all of The Meditations’ albums excluding three) have been the only remaining original member of The Meditations to continue touring. Accompanying him for almost 10 years\, as background vocalist are Laury Webb(who is also featured on The Good Of Man album) and DaddyLion Chandell. Together\, they’ve been touring the United States performing for massive crowds at venues like the Red Rock Amphitheater twice in seven years. And returning in 2013\, to celebrate Reggae On The River 30th year anniversary. A festival first opened by The Meditations and The Itals. \nCriss crossing the United States year after year\, embarking on journeys over waters to Africa in an attempt to quench the thirst for Meditations Music. On January 29\, 2010 Ansel performed for exhilarated fans at The Parker Place(in Abidjan\, Ivory Coast)\, which due to the demand\, resulted in being two events instead of one. This amazing experience produced a great live album\, titled Ansel Meditations Live In Africa. This album is \nof legendary proportions to say the least. Its Roots Reggae at its finest. Its raw and filled with uncut material\, capturing a monumental moment in time. \nThere’s most definitely a thirst for Roots Rock Reggae and that authentic Meditations sound. It’s by no means new but it’s growing in volume with every generation. Jose experienced the American Blues scene for a couple of years and played some of the best Blues Clubs in the country including Buddy Guy’s Legends and Rosa’s in Chicago and The Bradfordville Blues Club in Florida. He also played some of the biggest Blues festivals in the US such as The Washington DC Blues Festival and The Bonita Springs Blues Festival in Florida. He also did session work as a guitar player for Florida based singer Lauren Mitchell on her latest album recorded in Los Angeles California by award winning producer Tony Braunagel (Taj Mahal\, Robert Cray\, Bonnie Raitt). Jose was also a part of Panama’s annual Blues and Jazz festival held in Boquete Panama in February 2018 where he was backed up by the legendary Nighthawks (USA). At only 29 years old\, Jose played his first European tour this past January 2018 where he was featured at Keeping the Blues Alive in Holland\, Blues Sphere in Belgium and over 8 shows throughout Madrid Spain. “The Costa Rican Blues Ambassador” is now booking shows for his second European tour programmed for January 2019.
